From tears to happiness - Aatu's fight against pancreatitis

Feeeewhh...life here has been just simple chaos for two weeks... We almost lost our two older SWD’s and taking care of them has taken all my time and energy. Our old SWD female Thyra became very ill, on Wednesday two weeks ago she barely could walk so I rushed her to the vet. After an examination and some bloodtests we learned that Thyra had to be rushed into surgery due to pyometra (infection in uterus, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyometra). Thyra started to recover quite well so on Saturday evening we decided to go to a friend’s birthdayparty and take Thyra with us.

Everyhting was alright when we left home but when we arrived home approximately five hours later there was vomit everywhere. Almost immediately we found out that it was Aatu who had been throwing up and he kept on throwing up the whole night. The next morning, Sunday morning, I rushed Aatu to the vet as he had been throwing up and I also knew that he had not been drinking for atleast 14 hours. Johan had to carry Aatu to the car and he thru up in the car on the way to the vet. When I got him to the vet he was shaking, he had fever and very soon we got the results of the bloodtest... Almost all bloodtests were messed up, especially the infection values and liver values. The vet said that it is either hepatitis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hepatitis) or pancreatitis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancreatitis).
So, Aatu stayed at the vet in I.V. and got antibiotics, pain killers and medication against nausea. We got Aatu home for the night but from Monday till Thursday we had to take him every morningto the vet to have him on I.V. and every night we got him home as our vet is not open 24 hrs. Finally, last weeks Thursday we got Aatu home and started taking care of him at home, medications and feeding him low fat food a couple of table spoons at a time every few hours.

Yesterday Aatu had a vet’s check up and he is doing much better even though he still is quite tired, especially in the evenings. Next week Aatu’s liver values will be checked and we are hoping for the best but if nothing radical and dramatical comes up I assume he will get completely healthy :)
